Working With My Dad On The Job
We have a really small business called HandyFam Services. My mother used to be the manager and my dad was the main man. My brothers helped out as well, and my sister did janitorial. Now the younger one of my two brothers, Michael, works in tile and the older brother, Daniel, is good at pretty much anything like my dad. So my brother and dad are jacks-of-all-trades. My sister is no longer in the business either; she is a manager at Todd Communications. We all want to have the family business back at it again. I didn’t have a role before, but now I just help out with whatever I can. Currently I am taking care of the paper work and stuff, kind of like a secretary.
For one of my job shadows, I decided to shadow my dad. He works for himself as a handyman in our own mini-business. We were building a shed for a woman who owns a bunch of buildings and rents them out. She is currently living in her home, which is also a bed and breakfast. It was pretty cold out but we worked. As my dad was building the walls I was pulling out nails and nailing in some kind of hinge thing. I would help my dad in cutting wood and marking lengths for the doors. I would blow off the snow when it was snowing with an air compressor. I helped out with a bunch of the mini-tasks. I would unload the tools and when he need nails for the nail gun I would get them, or a tool from the van, I would get those too. I also loaded all the tools in the van too. When my dad was putting the window in, I helped with that too! Whatever I could help with, I did. And that was my day job shadowing my dad. It was fun, and I learned many new things. PLUS!! I helped build a shed! WHOOP! And if you know of anyone who needs a handyman, just call on us! We’ll be there and we are pretty cheap. Just trying to make enough money to keep a roof over our heads.
